To share the full story and the contributions she made to so many about Dr. Toy would take volumes of pages, so we are providing a brief outline for you to read.
Dr. Toy was a pioneer in the toy industry. Over her 50-year career, Dr. Auerbach authored 16 books on toys, parenting, and child development—including Dr. Toy’s Smart Play Smart Toys (translated in 13 countries), the pioneering guide Choosing Childcare, and a 4-volume reference set Child Care: A Comprehensive Guide.
Her first novel, The Contest, was later adapted into a screenplay. She also wrote The Alphabet Tree, a collection of poetry, and My Butterfly Collection: On the Wings of the Butterfly.
Dr. Auerbach's, final legacy, Amy’s Butterfly Garden (2025), was brought to life by her daughter, Amy Beth Auerbach, through Heirloom Patchwork Press.
We were given the opportunity to bring it to life in tribute to Dr. Auerbach through this product evaluation report, following being given the book to evaluate as a product submission.
An Award Winning Creation
In our evaluation process, we found that moms found Amy's Butterfly Garden to be "a touching piece"; a visual experience they could so easily sit down with their children, whether individually or as a group, "...creating a special time to be cherished," as they turned each page and shared the story in the pictorial book.
As we shared the book from one Mom to another, there was no question it was an award-winning book, especially when it came to the "Mom Approved Award." So many mothers shared their unquestioning approval of the book's content and were fully engaged with their child or children throughout the story.
Consumer Hands-On Evaluation
With this book, we took an entirely different approach in the consumer hands-on evaluation. What could possibly be more powerful for the consumers than to not just see and experience the book itself, but to actually see who helped produce the book? It wasn't just anybody; it was Amy Auerbach, the daughter of Dr. Stevanne Auerbach, the person who took her mom's manuscript and got it published after her passing!
It was rather an amazing experience to listen to the children at libraries and other places as they talked about actually seeing a picture of Amy Auerbach. It helped the children connect more personally with the book and its storyline, knowing they were seeing Amy not just in the story but in real life.
In a quote from one of the mothers participating in our consumer hands-on evaluation, "This was a personal experience that both my children and I could connect to and remember. To see the author's daughter holding the book her mom wrote and she got published following her passing was so moving and stirred my emotions."
Amy's Butterfly Garden undoubetdly passed our critical evaluation while providing a unique experience with the mothers and their kids. It was a consumer hands-on experience unlike any other we have done to date.
Amy's Butterfly Garden met the criteria we expect in our evaluation and passed this segment of our evaluation without a doubt.

Amy's Butterfly Garden is considered a STEM product, specifically designed to introduce young readers (ages 3–5) to life science concepts.
